Agentic AI: Infrastructure Transformation, Not Just Apps

Organizations need to treat agentic AI as an infrastructure transformation, not just another application. This is because success depends on establishing the right governance, automation, and infrastructure for autonomous AI to run safely at scale. Red Hat's Steve Shirkey and Chip McClelland emphasize that organizations must prepare their environments for autonomous systems. These systems require continuous oversight, secure identities, and governed execution. Many enterprises are currently stuck in a "chatbot loop," struggling to move beyond conversational assistants to AI that delivers measurable business outcomes. Shirkey notes that agentic AI agents should be treated as Non-Human Identities, each with its own permissions, accountability, and audit trails. Red Hat, for instance, assigns a cryptographic identity to every agent session. This allows its Model Context Protocol Gateway to determine what data and tools each agent can access under zero-trust principles. Organizations also need to prepare for new failure modes, like prompt injection attacks. These could manipulate agents into unauthorized actions. The bottom line is that as AI gains the ability to execute real-world tasks, organizations must adopt defense-in-depth security and redesign business processes to handle these new capabilities.
