Agentic AI Scales Cybercrime: Google Expert Warns

Agentic AI is giving cybercriminals the speed, scale, and autonomy to run operations with less human oversight. This is according to John Hultquist, chief analyst at Google Threat Intelligence Group. What's interesting is that threat actors are now using AI models during intrusions to navigate networks, select attack paths, and automate technical tasks. Agentic AI can carry out these actions independently. This allows criminals to expand operations, even with stolen or low-cost access to AI services. This shift also challenges traditional signature-based defenses. Attackers can use AI to rewrite malware and alter recognizable elements. This reduces the value of indicators built from repeated behavior. The bottom line: Security teams will need to place greater emphasis on behavioral detection and use AI to identify unusual activity across networks. This means defenders must adapt to a new landscape of autonomous cyber threats.
