AI Agent Plugins: Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI Unite for Standard

Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel are collaborating on a new open standard for AI agent extensions called Agent Plugins. This initiative aims to create a single package format, allowing developers to bundle and reuse extensions across different platforms. Previously, each product used its own unique formats and setup processes, requiring developers to rebuild their work for every platform. The standard defines a directory containing a manifest file called plugin.json. Version 1.0.0 supports two key components: Agent Skills, which manage reusable instructions and workflows, and MCP servers, which link agents to tools and data. This new standard focuses solely on packaging and discoverability, leaving marketplaces, permissions, and runtime environments untouched. The specification is being developed openly on GitHub. One interesting detail is the absence of Anthropic from this group, despite their previous work on similar open standards. This effort could simplify development for AI agents across the industry.
