AI Kill Switch: US Lawmakers Propose Bill After OpenAI Incident

Congressman Ted Lieu stated it's crucial for AI systems to have a kill switch and for the federal government to have clear authority to use it. Congressman Nathaniel Moran added that humans must maintain control over the technology they build. The proposed act would give the Department of Homeland Security the authority to order a private company to shut down an AI model. It would also require AI companies to have the technical capability to throttle, suspend, or shut down their AI tools. Additionally, it calls for companies to report technological incidents and failures to the government. This matters because it seeks to create a safeguard for public safety as AI technology continues to advance and take on more active roles.
