AI Lowers Scam Farm Cost to $5K: HUMAN Security Report

New research shows that AI is cutting the entry cost for scam farms to as little as $5,000. This finding comes from HUMAN Security, which calls this fraud ecosystem "FunFoneFarm." Off-the-shelf phone farms, cloud-hosted virtual devices, and general AI tools are combining to enable single operators to launch romance scams, investment fraud, and fake-account campaigns. HUMAN Security's Satori Threat Intelligence and Research Team documented this by purchasing and reverse-engineering a commercial phone farm kit. Their research reveals a threat actor can rent 25 virtual phones with supporting fraud services for $2,970 per month, without buying any physical hardware. A phone farm is a collection of mobile devices wired together and operated as a single fleet. The significance of physical hardware over a virtual environment is authenticity, making it harder for platforms to detect. This development could make it easier and cheaper for criminals to engage in various online scams.
