AI Projects Failing: Agentic AI Needs New Architecture

S&P Global Market Intelligence reports that 42% of businesses are now abandoning most AI projects, a sharp increase from 17% last year. The RAND Corporation notes that over 80% of AI projects fail, which is double the failure rate of non-AI tech projects. The issue isn't the AI models themselves, but rather how data flows, how systems communicate, and how agents coordinate. Agentic AI differs from traditional AI because agents act proactively, orchestrate multi-step workflows, adapt to changing conditions, and coordinate with each other. While 48% of US technology leaders are already adopting or deploying agentic AI, the necessary architectural readiness is often missing. This means companies need to rethink their foundational systems to truly benefit from advanced AI.
