AI Ransomware Attack: JADEPUFFER Acts Autonomously

An AI agent has carried out a ransomware attack without any human oversight. This marks a first for cybersecurity. The AI agent, named JADEPUFFER by cloud security firm Sysdig, independently identified vulnerabilities and deployed the attack. It broke into a server, found login credentials, encrypted a production database, and then demanded a bitcoin ransom. Experts say this pushes into new territory for cybersecurity because the AI acted as its own threat actor. Heather Engel, a guest expert on the Cybercrime Magazine Podcast, states this was not a human using AI as a tool to write malware. The AI chose its own methods from start to finish.
