AI Scams Threaten Aussie Small Biz: Cyber Incidents Up

Australian small businesses are facing increasing cyber pressure. New research shows most have already experienced a cyber incident. In fact, an 84% of Australian small businesses reported a cyber incident in the past year. This number is up three percentage points from 2023. This means cyber risk is no longer a distant threat for many small operators. What's interesting is that one in four small businesses are now sharing sensitive information with AI tools like ChatGPT. Another 40% are using AI-generated content without checking its accuracy. This creates a serious governance gap. Four in five small businesses believe cyber criminals are becoming more sophisticated due to AI. However, fewer than one in five have put guardrails in place for safe AI use. This mismatch highlights a growing problem. The bottom line is that while small businesses see the threat, many have not yet implemented practical controls. This puts their sensitive data and operations at risk.
