AI to Create AI: Recursive Self-Improvement by 2028

The global AI industry is focused on a future where AI creates better AI without human intervention. This concept is called Recursive Self-Improvement, or RSI. Unlike Large Language Models, which are static, RSI involves AI dynamically modifying its own design and code. The idea of "AI making AI" dates back to 1965, when a mathematician predicted "intelligence explosion." Now, this concept is a hot topic due to AI's rapidly improving coding ability. For example, one AI research startup recently raised $650 million. One non-profit organization estimates that the amount of work AI can do autonomously is doubling every seven months. An AI company, Antropic, reported that over 80% of code merged into their system last month was written by their AI, "Claude." This led to an eightfold increase in code productivity per engineer compared to 2024. However, a gap remains in what's called "research taste," which involves deciding valuable problems and trustworthy results. This development could reshape how AI is created and advanced.
