Some of the world's largest hedge funds recently faced attempted cyber intrusions. These attacks used AI-generated voice impersonation. Reports indicate that Point72 Asset Management informed investors about a breach attempt. The same campaign also targeted Millennium Management, Two Sigma Investments, and Citadel, as well as several private equity firms. Two Sigma stated its security team stopped the intrusion before any systems or data were compromised. Investigators identified these attacks as "vishing," or voice phishing. Fraudsters used AI tools to replicate voices and persuade colleagues to grant access to systems or sensitive information. Experts note that generative AI has significantly increased the scale of these operations, making sophisticated techniques more accessible.
