Air Force Cyber: New Plan to Combat AI Threats

Air Forces Cyber has developed a new defensive cyber operations "campaign plan." This plan aims to harden networks against emerging AI-posed cyber threats. Its commander, Lt. Gen. Thomas Hensley, states that autonomous AI attacks are possible today. The plan includes four main efforts. First, hardening systems and networks through constant monitoring and proactive threat hunting. Second, a deliberate defense prioritizing key networks like nuclear command and control. Third, proactive cost imposition to confuse or divert adversaries. Finally, defensive architecture design, a whole-of-Air Force effort to implement concepts like zero trust and multi-factor authentication. The goal is to verify users and prevent adversaries, including AI agents, from accessing sensitive information even if they breach a network. This initiative comes as frontier AI models are a recent and growing concern. This matters because it highlights the military's response to advanced AI cyber threats.
