Alibaba has made its next-generation AI model, Qwen3.8-Max, widely accessible to global users. This comes ahead of an open-weights release planned for next week. What's interesting is this marks Alibaba's return to open-sourcing its top-tier AI models, after keeping some recent releases proprietary. This flagship model has 2.4 trillion parameters and supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens. It's available to global developers through Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio APIs and the QwenWork platform. Qwen3.8-Max is a multimodal foundation model, meaning it can process various data types, from documents to live streams, to build searchable knowledge bases. Alibaba says it can also recreate software from screenshots, generate games, and convert 2D floor plans into 3D visualizations. The company has positioned Qwen3.8-Max for tasks like autonomous coding and complex research. This move shows Chinese developers are aggressively narrowing the gap with leading US AI labs.
