Amazon employees reportedly created an unofficial AI tool called MeshClaw to deliberately use up "tokens." This comes after managers pushed for increased AI use and began tracking token counts, which measure interaction with AI systems. More than 30 employees reportedly developed MeshClaw, and thousands are said to use it daily. The goal was to leave a visible trail of AI activity for internal tracking systems. This practice is part of a broader trend called "tokenmaxxing," where employees increase token usage, sometimes regardless of whether it improves their work. Similar reports have surfaced at other companies. The push for AI adoption reflects a corporate race to demonstrate rapid integration of the technology. However, flashy AI metrics don't always reflect real value, and this behavior can distort incentives, shifting focus from outcomes to raw usage.
