Anthropic AI Export Ban: US Halts Global Access to Models

The US government has ordered Anthropic to cut off all foreign access to its newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. This marks the first time export controls have been used to shut down a major lab's frontier AI systems. The directive, issued on June 12, requires Anthropic to immediately suspend access for all foreign nationals, including the company’s international employees. A reported "jailbreak" vulnerability triggered national security concerns, specifically that the models could be exploited to identify software vulnerabilities. Anthropic complied swiftly, disabling global access to both systems. The Trump administration issued this directive as part of a broader strategy treating advanced AI technologies as national security assets. Anthropic criticized the government's approach, arguing that a minor potential vulnerability should not justify halting international access to commercially deployed models. Over a dozen cybersecurity experts have also criticized the ban, calling it a dangerous move. This action introduces a new category of risk for investors and the AI industry, as commercially deployed AI products can now be shut down internationally without prior notice.
