Anthropic Claude Fable 5: New AI Model & Safeguards

Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5, its most capable generally available AI model to date. This new Mythos class model includes safeguards, routing some high-risk requests to Claude Opus 4.8. Fable 5 reportedly outperforms previous models in areas like software engineering, knowledge work, and scientific research. It shows stronger performance on longer and more demanding tasks. When Fable 5 detects requests related to cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, or model distillation, the response is handled by Opus 4.8. What's interesting is that these safeguards are tuned conservatively and are expected to trigger in less than 5% of sessions on average. Alongside Fable 5, Anthropic also launched Claude Mythos 5, which uses the same underlying model but has fewer safeguards. Mythos 5 is initially available to trusted cybersecurity partners and infrastructure providers, including the US government through Project Glasswing. Stripe reported that Fable 5 completed a codebase-wide migration in a 50-million-line Ruby codebase in one day, a task that would normally take a team over two months. The model also excels in agentic coding, financial reasoning, and complex vision tasks. It shows improved long context and memory performance, staying focused across millions of tokens. The bottom line is that these new models aim to offer advanced AI capabilities while attempting to manage associated risks, potentially transforming how complex tasks are approached in various industries.
