Anthropic Settles Copyright Lawsuit for $1.5 Billion

Anthropic has finalized a record $1.5 billion settlement in a copyright lawsuit. This agreement addresses allegations of using pirated content to train its Claude LLMs. Anthropic does not admit wrongdoing, but must delete unauthorized data. This resolution largely eliminates a significant legal risk for the company's anticipated IPO, which targets a $965 billion valuation. The lawsuit, filed by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, claimed Anthropic used over 7 million pirated works. A judge previously ruled that while training AI on books doesn't violate copyright, Anthropic still needed to stand trial for using pirated content. Copyright owners of eligible books will receive about $3,000 each. However, ongoing regulatory scrutiny on AI safety and data transparency remains. Investors are now focusing on Anthropic’s technical roadmap and revenue growth to justify its valuation.
