Anthropic's AI Stance Questioned by Authoritarian Investors

AI company Anthropic states it is essential for the US and its allies to lead in AI development to prevent tech-powered tyranny from authoritarian governments. The company claims it will protect democratic values against repression. However, a portion of Anthropic is owned by the Emirati dictatorship of Abu Dhabi, an authoritarian monarchy. This fact is not mentioned in Anthropic's policy paper, which focuses on the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party. Anthropic argues that democracies, not authoritarian regimes, must lead in AI development to avoid "authoritarian AI." The company's CEO has also stated opposition to "AI-powered authoritarianism" broadly. This raises questions about the company's consistent stance on authoritarianism, given its own ownership structure.
