Apple Intelligence China Launch: Powered by Alibaba's Qwen

Apple Intelligence is set to launch in China, powered by Alibaba’s Qwen. Apple received approval from China’s Cyberspace Administration, clearing the way for a full rollout later this year. This launch is expected to happen alongside new iPhone models and the next major iOS update. Alibaba will supply its Qwen large language model family to power Apple Intelligence experiences for Chinese users. Qwen will enable text and image understanding and generation across Apple’s platforms. The model will run on Apple’s servers located strictly within China to comply with local data residency requirements. What's interesting is that Apple initially explored a partnership with Baidu, but reports indicated issues with the quality and performance of Baidu's models and their data handling. Baidu's role has now been scaled back to more targeted contributions. The bottom line is that China is a critical market for Apple, and the absence of these AI features has been a significant gap for its users there.
