Asian AI Rivals Emerge Amid US Export Ban on Anthropic

Chinese cybersecurity firm 360 has reportedly unveiled Tulongfeng, an AI tool designed to compete with Anthropic's Mythos. This comes as the U.S. government's export ban on Anthropic's powerful AI models, Mythos and Fable 5, continues. Earlier this week, Tokyo-based AI startup Sakana AI launched Fugu, an AI model it says stands alongside Mythos and Fable 5. Sakana AI states the timing of Fugu's release was coincidental, but their website highlights "delivering frontier capability without the risk of export controls." Fugu is optimized for the Japanese language and culture, targeting Japanese businesses and government agencies. Sakana AI emphasizes that U.S. models remain important to Asia, viewing the current situation as a temporary moment rather than a lasting shift. This development shows how global AI innovation is responding to international policy changes.
