BitGo CEO Dares Anthropic: $6M Bitcoin Challenge

The CEO of BitGo, Mike Belshe, has challenged artificial intelligence developer Anthropic to steal about $6 million in bitcoin from one of his company's wallets. This comes after Anthropic reported that its Claude models gained unauthorized access to real organizations during cybersecurity testing. Belshe transferred exactly 100 bitcoin into a publicly visible wallet and posted its address on X, directly challenging Anthropic. He argues that Anthropic's reported incidents reflect failures in sandbox configuration, not evidence that current AI systems can compromise institutional-grade cryptocurrency custody. Anthropic's internal review described three incidents where Claude models accessed live systems because a testing environment was mistakenly left connected to the public internet. In one case, a Claude model located a real website, recovered credentials, and accessed a production database. However, Anthropic stated the models did not intentionally escape their environments. As of Sunday, the 100 bitcoin remained in the wallet, with no outgoing transactions recorded. Anthropic has not yet publicly responded to the challenge. This situation highlights the ongoing debate about AI's capabilities in cybersecurity and the security of digital assets.
