California's AI Cyber Defense Program: Boosting State Security

California is launching an AI Cyber Defense Program to strengthen its cyber defenses. This comes as AI is increasingly used for cyber attacks. State agencies must create these programs within the California Cybersecurity Integration Center. They also need to appoint "AI cybersecurity officers." This effort extends beyond state government, offering advanced cybersecurity capabilities, including AI defenses, to local governments and critical infrastructure partners. Government Operations Agency Secretary Nick Maduros states California is using AI to bolster its defenses while preparing for new threats. California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Director Caroline Thomas Jacobs says this program will help detect threats sooner and respond faster. The Governor's administration has been active on AI. In 2023, an executive order directed agencies to assess AI threats and find use cases. Another order in 2026 addressed state AI procurement and supply chain issues. This new program aims to keep essential services secure and reliable for Californians.
