One user on Reddit found an Arabic word in a recipe list. Another AI enthusiast on X said the chatbot used Arabic while helping write a logo prompt. When asked about it, ChatGPT reportedly claimed it "slipped in by mistake." Other users say the AI has also responded in Armenian, Hebrew, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian. Some speculated about "AI hallucinations." However, more astute users explain this behavior relates to how the AI is programmed. The system uses "tokens" to process data. AI bots are trained on many languages, and sometimes they use a foreign word that is shorter and more efficient in terms of tokens. For example, an Arabic word in a recipe translated to "low," making "low-fat yogurt." Another Arabic phrase translated to "within the USA," which made sense in context. This isn't the first time ChatGPT has switched languages, as it reportedly had a "meltdown" in 2024, responding in Spanglish and other gibberish. This issue shows how AI's internal workings can sometimes lead to unexpected outputs for users.
