ChatGPT for Linux: Desktop App Now in Preview

OpenAI has launched a dedicated desktop app for ChatGPT on Linux, now available in preview worldwide. This release bundles ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex into a single native client. It comes as .deb and .rpm packages for both x64 and ARM64 architectures. OpenAI stated that Linux was one of the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, extending its reach across every major desktop operating system. The app targets Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, covering the base for many other distributions. The installer also adds an OpenAI repository for automatic updates. This is significant because the Codex feature, which can interact with your desktop and local files, works much better as a native application than through a browser. This closes a gap for developers who build cloud infrastructure, as many use Linux workstations. This matters because it brings powerful AI tools directly to the platform where much of the world's cloud infrastructure is built, potentially streamlining developer workflows.
