ChatGPT Mac Activity: OpenAI Adds Computer History

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot can now add your Mac activity to its memories. This new Computer History feature logs your interactions with websites and applications if you choose to opt in. What's interesting is this feature launched this week for subscribers on MacOS, but not yet for users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom. Users can select which applications and websites are tracked, pause tracking, and view or delete their history. Unlike some similar features, this implementation does not capture screens or record voice input. Instead, it uses a MacOS accessibility API to capture clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and app switches. This activity is then summarized into what you've done, not what you saw or heard. The summaries are generated in the cloud but stored locally on your system. OpenAI warns that Computer History files can contain sensitive information and are not encrypted by the feature itself. This matters because it introduces a new dimension to how your digital interactions are tracked and stored.
