ChatGPT Parental Controls: Teen Safety & Setup Guide

OpenAI has released ChatGPT for Teens, an educational tool with stricter content controls. The company says it automatically enrolls users under 18. However, child safety experts believe the default restrictions may not go far enough. Parents can link their ChatGPT accounts with their child's to access important features and settings. This allows parents to toggle controls on or off. To link accounts, parents open the Settings menu, select "Parental controls," then "Add family member." They can invite their teen via email or phone. Once accepted, the teen's name appears under "Family members," allowing parents to manage individual settings. Teens can also invite a parent to manage their account. Parental controls are only active while a child is under 18. When a user is determined to be an adult, OpenAI moves them to the regular ChatGPT experience, disabling parental controls and severing the account connection. This matters because it highlights the ongoing need for parents to actively manage their teen's online safety.
