OpenAI has launched a new "teen mode" for ChatGPT that refuses to do homework. This feature, designed for users aged 13 to 17, includes a Responsible Homework Reminder. If a student tries to get a finished essay or solved problem, it redirects them to a Study Mode instead of providing a ready-made answer. What's interesting is that this mode aims to guide students with a question-based approach, quizzes, and learning visualizations. Users or their parents can also set study hours for automatic activation. A high school math teacher noted that this tool can help students who don't have assistance at home by guiding them step-by-step. The system activates when a user identifies as 13 to 17 years old, or if OpenAI's systems determine they are under 18 based on account age, usage, and topics. This new mode offers a middle ground between banning AI in education and allowing unrestricted use. It matters because it could change how students use AI for learning.
