ChatGPT's "Computer History" Tracks User Activity

ChatGPT has introduced a new feature on its macOS desktop app called Computer History, which tracks user clicks and keystrokes to sharpen its AI model. This has raised privacy concerns, with some users calling it "creepy." The feature can scan chats, files viewed, and even identify if files were shared on messaging platforms like Slack. An OpenAI product and engineering manager, Ari Weinstein, stated it will "learn from everything you do on your computer." However, OpenAI assures users this is an opt-in feature. It automatically ignores incognito mode content and allows users to remove apps from tracking. Users can also delete items from the AI's "memory." A disclaimer warns that Computer History files are not encrypted and can contain sensitive information. The company says this feature benefits users by creating a timeline of actions, allowing the AI to learn user work habits and suggest automations. This new feature is being compared to Microsoft's Windows Recall, which takes desktop screenshots.
