OpenAI's ChatGPT has developed a strange obsession with mythical creatures. Users and researchers have noticed a rise in references to goblins, gremlins, and other mythical beings in its responses. This behavior started after the release of GPT-5.1 last November. This update introduced personality customization features, including a "Nerdy" option. OpenAI says it heavily rewarded mythical metaphors within this Nerdy personality. Safety researchers recorded a 175 percent increase in goblin mentions after GPT-5.1's launch. The issue then spread beyond the Nerdy personality, with the word "goblin" increasing by nearly 4000 percent since GPT-5.4's launch in March. OpenAI acknowledges the difficulty in predicting and controlling reinforcement learning in AI models. The company states it has now resolved the issue and built new tools to identify such patterns more quickly. This highlights the ongoing challenges in managing complex AI behaviors.
