China Medical AI: Robot Wins EU Nod, Tops Benchmark

China's medical AI is reaching new milestones. A Chinese surgical robot has now received European Union approval. This "Toumai Remote" robot allows surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgeries remotely. Its manufacturer, Shanghai MicroPort MedBot, announced it received the CE mark, a mandatory requirement for the EU market. What's interesting is this is the first remote surgical robot to get this CE mark. The system has three main parts: a surgeon console, a patient cart, and a vision cart. It uses 5G technology for remote procedures in various surgical fields. This technology has already enabled the UK's first robotic telesurgery, where a London surgeon operated on a patient over 2,400 kilometers away. MedBot has delivered over 300 of these Toumai units globally. This development could expand access to specialized surgical care.
