China's Agentic AI Phones: A Challenge to Apple?

Chinese companies are racing to develop a new generation of AI-powered smartphones. These devices aim to understand requests, complete tasks, and make decisions for users. Brands like ZTE, Honor, and StepFun are unveiling their latest innovations. ZTE has introduced the NaviX Ultra, which it calls the world's first agentic AI smartphone. This device is built entirely around AI. It can launch ByteDance’s AI assistant, Doubao, through a button or voice command. The goal is for the AI system to handle tasks without users switching between multiple apps. AI startup StepFun also revealed a smartphone with its own operating system and an AI assistant called Amoo. Honor plans to launch new AI-focused devices later this year, using models with Alibaba. This push by Chinese manufacturers could challenge Apple, which recently received approval to roll out Apple Intelligence in China through partnerships with Alibaba and Baidu. The future of smartphones may now be defined by AI capabilities, not just hardware.
