China's AI Surges: GLM-5.2 Rivals Anthropic, OpenAI

Chinese AI models are gaining ground on Anthropic and OpenAI. Z.ai released GLM-5.2, an open-source system running at roughly one-sixth the cost of US frontier labs. This launch came as Washington tightened access to American models. GLM-5.2 has 750 billion parameters and a 1-million-token context window. It runs entirely on domestic Chinese chips. Benchmarks show GLM-5.2 is now within a single percentage point of Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on a key evaluation. The release happened shortly after Anthropic disabled global access to its advanced models, and OpenAI limited access to GPT-5.6. Z.ai shares surged over 30% in Hong Kong trading. The cost advantage of Chinese models is significant. DeepSeek V4 Pro charges $3.48 per million output tokens, while Anthropic’s Fable 5 charged $50 for the same output. This is causing businesses to rethink their AI vendors. OpenRouter, an AI aggregator, shows Chinese models now hold the top four positions among the most widely used systems globally. This shift could change the global AI industry landscape.
