China's Kimi K3: World's Largest Open-Source AI Model

Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has fully open-sourced its flagship large language model, Kimi K3. This model has 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the world's largest open-source AI model by parameter count. The release includes the model's complete weights, a technical report, and infrastructure technologies for training. This allows developers worldwide to download, deploy, and further develop it. While China has open-sourced AI models before, this is the first time a flagship model of this scale has been fully released globally. China's pace of open-sourcing large AI models has accelerated significantly this year. Chinese-developed open-source models account for 41% of global downloads, and the top six most-called large language models worldwide are all from Chinese teams. Chinese models have held the global record for the largest open-source model for nine months over the past year. The country's open-source AI ecosystem now ranges from models with hundreds of millions to hundreds of billions of parameters. These models are moving beyond general assistants into specific industry applications like automobiles, manufacturing, and healthcare. Chinese open-source AI models have exceeded 10 billion cumulative downloads, the highest globally. This means six out of every ten large-model downloads worldwide are now from China, impacting how industries can access and customize AI.
