CISOs & AI Risk: Leadership Understanding Varies, Report Finds

A new report reveals that 80% of optimistic CISOs believe their leadership has a fair or good understanding of AI risk. This finding from IANS and Artico Search highlights a significant difference between optimistic and pessimistic security leaders. Here's the thing: there's a 32-point gap in how optimistic versus pessimistic CISOs view leadership's grasp of AI risks. Among those who are pessimistic, fewer than half, just 48%, share the same positive view of their leadership's understanding. What's interesting is that program maturity also plays a role. CISOs with mature AI security programs rated their current AI risk at an average of 3.7 on a 10-point scale. This jumped to 7.8 for those with low-maturity programs. The report also found that 74% of optimistic CISOs have clearly defined AI governance ownership, compared to 40% of pessimistic ones. Plus, 81% of optimistic CISOs own the AI security budget, while only half of pessimistic CISOs do. This matters because a clear understanding and ownership of AI risk can significantly impact an organization's security posture.
