Claude Opus 5 Launch: Anthropic's AI Cost Battle Begins

Anthropic is expected to launch its new AI model, Claude Opus 5, on July 24th, Korea time. This launch sets the stage for a three-way competition with OpenAI's GPT models and new Chinese AI offerings. What's interesting is the focus on cost efficiency. The probability of this launch recently spiked to 88% on Polymarket. The new Opus 5 model aims to reduce the total cost for businesses using AI over time. Its predecessor, Opus 4.8, already saw nominal unit prices drop to one-third compared to Opus 4. However, the real operating costs depend on how many steps an AI needs for a task. Opus 4.8 improved efficiency but had stability issues. If Opus 5 fixes this, overall task costs could fall significantly. Competition is intense. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, rolled out on July 9th, reportedly outperforms Claude Fable 5 and costs much less. Chinese models like Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, launched July 16th, also offer competitive pricing and performance. Kimi K3's API pricing is $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, which is half the cost of GPT-5.6 Sol. The bottom line is that for Anthropic to reclaim leadership, Opus 5 needs to offer both top performance and a compelling cost benefit for businesses.
