Cloudera & Mercy Corps: AI for Humanitarian Aid

Cloudera and Mercy Corps are deepening their partnership with a new AI solution called VERA. This tool is designed to transform how humanitarian teams gather information and analyze crises. VERA, which stands for Verified Evidence & Research Assistant, is powered by Cloudera AI Studios and built on Amazon Web Services. It uses Anthropic’s Claude models to automate research and analysis workflows. The goal is to provide faster, more localized insights in environments with limited resources. This agentic AI solution helps humanitarian teams make quicker, more informed decisions by aggregating information and generating crisis-specific analysis. It has already shown significant results. For example, VERA provides up to 90% time savings in producing security reports for Mercy Corps teams in Colombia. It also reduces research time for Sudan-focused reporting from five or six days down to two or three. The estimated cost savings are roughly $2,000 per Colombia security report and $1,500 per Sudan analysis report. This expanded reporting capacity allows for more advanced and timely analysis that would otherwise be impossible. This matters because it helps humanitarian organizations respond more effectively to complex global crises.
