Coinbase AI Agent: Crypto Trading with ChatGPT & Claude

Coinbase has launched a new service that allows artificial intelligence agents to trade crypto on your behalf. This system lets you place orders using natural language commands from large language models like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT. To use it, you sign up for a separate account, authorize an agent, provide investing instructions, and set spending limits. The agent can then transact for you. You can link it to your main Coinbase balance or keep it separate. The level of autonomy for the agent varies, from single recommendations to a full handoff based on a thesis. Currently, the system supports spot cryptocurrencies and crypto derivatives, with stocks and prediction markets planned for later. A natively integrated protocol called x402 allows the agent to pay for data feeds. For now, access is through an LLM connected to the Model Context Protocol or a command-line interface, requiring some technical ability. This new tool is likely valuable only if you invest effort in working with the agents. It's important to view this system as a novelty rather than a guaranteed way to generate significant wealth quickly.
