Coinbase AI Agent: Trade Crypto with ChatGPT & Claude

Coinbase Global has launched a new product allowing an artificial intelligence agent to operate a crypto trading account. This AI agent places orders using natural language commands from large language models like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT. To use it, you sign up for a separate account called Coinbase for Agents. You authorize an agent, provide investing instructions, and set spending limits. The agent then transacts on your behalf. You can associate the account with your main Coinbase balance or keep it separate. The agent's autonomy can range from a single recommendation to full control based on a thesis you provide. It works with Coinbase Advanced and currently supports spot cryptocurrencies and crypto derivatives. Stocks and prediction markets are planned for later. There's also a protocol called x402 that lets the agent pay for data feeds. For now, you can only access the system from inside an LLM by connecting to the Model Context Protocol or from a command-line interface, requiring some technical ability. This tool is not a shortcut to generating quick wealth. It involves technical aspects like choosing an LLM, writing prompts, and fixing errors. This new tool changes how some investors might interact with cryptocurrency trading.
