Cursor Launches Origin: New Code Hosting Platform vs. GitHub

Cursor is now challenging GitHub with its own code hosting platform called Origin. This new service extends Cursor's AI coding business beyond just its editor. Origin aims to combine code hosting, review, and AI agent functionality into one tool. It officially rolled out in early beta to most paid plans on August 17, 2026. This timing coincided with a global GitHub outage, which Cursor describes as an "unplanned advertisement." Origin is Cursor's first major product launch since its $60 billion all-stock sale to SpaceX, which closed on August 14, 2026. It is built on Git, so the version control system itself remains familiar. Developers can use Origin within the Cursor client or via a command line tool. It allows teams to create, clone, browse, and search code, as well as manage pull requests. Cursor's AI agents can work directly on these repositories, answering questions or making changes. There are two types of agents: desktop agents, which run on a developer's computer, and cloud agents, which can continue tasks even when the computer is off. Cursor also acquired Graphite in December 2025 to enhance its pull request workflows. Developers don't have to abandon GitHub entirely. They can connect GitHub organizations to Cursor, and synced repositories update in real time. While pushes still go to GitHub, pull request activity syncs both ways. This development offers a new option for developers looking to streamline their coding workflow.
