Data Breaches Soar: AI-Enabled Attacks Up 56%

Data breach notices have already surpassed last year's total. Over 471 million victim notices were linked to data compromises in the first half of 2026. This number is up from 297.5 million notices in all of 2025. What's interesting is that an incident at education tool Canvas accounted for over half of these notices, totaling 275 million. The number of security incidents also rose to 1,803 in the first half of the year, compared to 1,732 in the same period last year. Here's the thing: artificial intelligence is playing a growing role. Between March 2025 and February 2026, one in four breaches was AI-enabled, a 56% increase from the previous year. Also, malicious insider incidents are on the rise, with 21 events in the first half of this year, up from just three in all of 2025. The bottom line is that despite increased cybersecurity efforts, data breaches are accelerating, posing an ongoing risk to your personal information.
