Fivetran & dbt Labs Merge: AI Data Infrastructure Powerhouse

Fivetran and dbt Labs have completed their merger. The combined entity aims to build an open data infrastructure layer for AI agents. George Fraser remains CEO, and Tristan Handy becomes President. Together, they serve over 100,000 data teams globally. Here's the thing: Fivetran handles continuous data synchronization and completeness, while dbt enriches that data with business logic and governance. Their platform supports various clouds, engines, and tools built on open standards. What's interesting is that while 60 percent of enterprises are investing millions in agentic AI, only 15 percent have a data foundation ready to support these workloads. In fact, 85 percent are running agentic AI on an unprepared data foundation. Upon merger completion, they are launching several joint products, including dbt Core v2.0 (alpha) and dbt State (preview), which could reduce infrastructure costs by 30 percent or more. They are also introducing Agents Schema, an open-source standard for a shared context layer for AI agents. The bottom line: This merger and its new offerings are designed to help businesses build trusted AI agents by providing a robust and reliable data infrastructure.
