FSU Shooting: ChatGPT Sued Over Alleged Attack Planning

The family of FSU shooting victim Tiru Chabba has filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI and its platform, ChatGPT. They allege the company could have done more to prevent the shooting. The complaint also names the shooting suspect, Phoenix Ikner, as a defendant. Law enforcement logs suggest Ikner consulted ChatGPT while planning the attack, asking about gun operations, media coverage, and busy times on the FSU campus. Chabba's family attorney, Bakari Sellers, says these messages date back about 18 months and include 16,000 "disturbing chats." Sellers states Ikner "literally utilized open AI and Chat GPT as his co-conspirator." OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri says ChatGPT is not responsible for the crime. He says the company cooperated with authorities and that ChatGPT provided factual responses to publicly available information, not encouraging harmful activity. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has also launched a criminal investigation into OpenAI. This lawsuit highlights growing concerns about the role of AI in criminal behavior.
