Gemini 3.5 Pro AWOL Amidst Rapid Flash Releases

Google recently debuted its Gemini 3.8 Flash AI model, excelling at coding and matching larger models in performance at a lower cost. This release follows its predecessor, Gemini 3.7 Flash, by just three weeks. In total, Google has released four Gemini Flash models since May. Flash models are the smallest and fastest versions, designed for low-cost responses without sacrificing much power. However, Google's flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro, expected in June, is still unreleased. This has led some to question Google's position in frontier AI. Meta's chief AI officer, Alexander Wang, noted his company's new Muse Spark 1.3 model now outperforms all Google models on a key benchmark, placing Google's best at 10th. Google, however, highlights its rapid release of Flash models as progress in recursive self-improvement, a method where AI models improve their own code. This matters because it points to a significant shift in how AI models are being developed and refined.
