Bloomberg reported that this delay is causing frustration among Google engineers and researchers. They are concerned Google could lose its market edge to rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI. Google stated they are still testing 3.5 Pro and engaging with the U.S. government on model testing. The delay might be due to bureaucracy within Google and concerns that Gemini 3.5 Pro may not be competitive with recent releases from rivals. Since Google I/O, Anthropic released Claude Mythos, and OpenAI announced GPT-5.6 Sol. A Chinese AI lab, Moonshot, also released Kimi K3, an open-source model. This ongoing delay highlights the rapid pace of innovation in the AI industry.
