Gemini AI in Waymo: In-Car Assistant for Robotaxis

Google's Gemini AI assistant is now integrating directly into Waymo's Ojai autonomous vehicles. These Ojai robotaxis are purpose-built for ride-hailing and are currently available to riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. They are also coming to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year. What's interesting is that Gemini will act as an in-car assistant, activated by voice commands through the vehicle's display. Passengers can ask Gemini to adjust cabin temperature, find nearby coffee shops, or explain local landmarks. Here's the thing: Gemini runs separately from the Waymo Driver, which controls the vehicle, and cannot access real-time driving data or control movement. However, it can pass requests like pulling over to the Waymo Driver. This Gemini feature is currently in beta, with plans to enhance its functionality over time. This development means a more interactive and personalized experience for passengers in autonomous vehicles.
