GitHub Copilot CLI has rolled out an improvement called smarter subagent delegation. This makes the system more selective about when it uses helper agents. Here's the thing: while delegation can be powerful, too much of it can create friction and slow things down. The new system helps the main agent avoid unnecessary handoffs. This improvement has rolled out to 100% of Copilot CLI production traffic. You can access it by updating to version 1.0.42 or later. What's interesting is this change reduced tool failures per session by 23% in a production A/B test. Search tool failures dropped by 27%, and edit tool failures by 18%. It also improved total user wait time by 5% at P95 and 3% at P75, with no quality regression. The bottom line: this means fewer repeated searches, fewer failure-prone tool paths, and less waiting for developers using Copilot CLI.
