GitHub Copilot Updates: Free Desktop App & Cost Control

GitHub Copilot recently released three key updates. The standalone desktop app is now available to all Copilot plans, including free-tier accounts and GitHub Education licenses. This app allows developers to run full agent sessions across macOS, Windows, and Linux. What's interesting is that this desktop app creates isolated worktrees for each task. This means multiple tasks can run in parallel without file conflicts or context issues. Developers can start sessions from GitHub issues, pull requests, or plain-text prompts, and completed work integrates with existing team review processes. Another significant update is that developers without a Copilot plan can now use the app by bringing their own model provider credentials. This "bring-your-own-key" feature decouples GitHub's agent runtime from the model subscription. The bottom line is that these updates significantly lower the barrier for autonomous AI coding, expand Copilot's reach, and give administrators more control over spending.
