Google DeepMind: Why AI Agent Building is Hard

Philipp Schmid from Google DeepMind has explained why even experienced engineers struggle to build AI agents. He highlighted five "mental model collisions" that occur when moving from traditional engineering to AI agents. One major difference is the shift from deterministic to probabilistic thinking. Traditional software engineering involves clear, predictable steps, where engineers write code and test it rigorously. This process is linear. However, building AI agents requires a different approach. This insight helps us understand the unique challenges in developing advanced AI systems.
