Google has responded after its search engine incorrectly reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had died. On August 12, searches for Altman's name showed he had passed away that same day, appearing in the biographical information section at the top of search results. This quickly caused confusion on social media, as there were no official announcements. Google clarified on X that this was not a manual change, stating that "When people vandalize public info sources, this can affect the information that appears in Search." It's believed this refers to Wikipedia, where Altman's page had been edited with false claims, including one about assassination. Wikipedia has since restricted editing on his page. This incident highlights how easily misinformation can spread through widely used platforms.
