Google to Open Android to ChatGPT & Other AI Assistants

Google must now open up Android to other AI assistants like ChatGPT. Previously, only Google's Gemini had full system access on Android phones. The European Commission issued two binding decisions on July 16th under the Digital Markets Act. This means Google has to make eleven key Android features available to competing AI services, free of charge, across the entire Android ecosystem. This includes devices from Samsung and other manufacturers. What's interesting is that you should eventually be able to use your preferred assistant, whether it's ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, as easily as Gemini. This includes waking it by voice, even with the display off, and having it perform tasks in other apps. The bottom line is that these changes are not immediate. Google has until August 1st, 2027, to implement these changes with Android 18. This ruling aims to give users more choice and control over their AI assistants on Android devices.
