Google's AMIE AI Matches Doctors in Disease Management

Google's AMIE artificial intelligence system matched primary care doctors overall and outperformed them on several disease-management measures in a recent study. This research, published in the journal Nature, highlights the potential clinical value of AMIE, a large language model-based AI for simulated multi-visit disease management. The study found AMIE was non-inferior to doctors on overall management reasoning. It also scored significantly higher on the appropriateness of the overall plan and treatment recommendations across all three visits. AMIE's precision in recommending investigations was also significantly higher. However, researchers caution that AMIE remains experimental and is not yet tested in real clinical care. This technology could one day change how medical advice is given and received.
